Drug combination venetoclax-obinutuzumab outperforms chemotherapy in leukemia treatment

A new drug combination has proven more effective than traditional chemotherapy for treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a blood cancer. Venetoclax and obinutuzumab together eliminated cancer cells more completely in patients, according to results from two major clinical trials. In one study, the drug combination achieved an 86.5 percent success rate in clearing cancer cells, compared to 52 percent with standard chemotherapy. Patients who received the new treatment also stayed healthier for longer periods. The drugs work differently than older chemotherapy methods, targeting cancer cells more precisely. Importantly, patients who completed the fixed-duration treatment maintained their improvement for at least two years afterward. These results suggest that venetoclax and obinutuzumab should become the preferred first-line treatment for many leukemia patients.
