Drone with explosives found at German airport in August

Germany has officially blamed Russia for a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on 4 August 2026. The drone was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane in a secure part of the airport. It contained military-grade explosives and was safely defused. The same day, a second flying object hit a cargo plane close to the airport, causing minor damage. That aircraft landed safely in Hannover. German authorities said the drone's components and explosives matched patterns from other known Russian operations. They concluded that Russia supplied equipment and knowledge, and recruited agents to carry out the attack. Germany has summoned the Russian ambassador and closed a Russian consulate. Leipzig/Halle Airport is an important hub for NATO and Ukrainian military supplies.
