Democrat Amish Shah wins Arizona primary for U.S. House seat

Amish Shah won the Democratic primary for Arizona's 1st Congressional District on July 21, 2026. Shah is a state lawmaker from District 5 in the Arizona House of Representatives. He beat three other candidates, including Marlene Galán-Woods, who had the backing of the national Democratic party organisation. Shah also won this same primary in 2024, when he received 23.5% of the vote. The district is competitive. Donald Trump won it narrowly in 2024, so it leans slightly Republican. Democratic voters in the district have now chosen a candidate that their national party leaders did not prefer. Shah will face Republican Jay Feely in the general election.
