Dame Penelope Keith, British comedy actress, dies at 86

Dame Penelope Keith, one of Britain's most popular comedy actresses, died on 29 June 2026 at her home in Surrey. She was 86 and had been suffering from cancer.

Keith began her acting career in 1959 and worked for nearly seven decades in television, theatre, and radio. She became famous for playing Margo Leadbetter in the sitcom The Good Life, a snobbish but likeable character that audiences loved. At its most popular, the show attracted almost 24 million viewers. She also starred in To the Manor Born, another hugely successful comedy series.

During her career she received a BAFTA award in 1977 and an Olivier Award in 1976. In 2014, she was appointed a Dame for her contributions to the arts and charity. She is survived by her husband, Rodney Timson, and their two adopted children.
