Cyberattack hits Minnesota water systems as officials investigate Iran

Hackers attacked more than 30 water systems in Minnesota in late July 2026. The attack targeted technology that workers use to monitor and control water equipment from a distance. No communities asked residents to change how they use drinking water.

US officials and the Minnesota Fusion Center found evidence linking the attack to an Iranian cybersabotage campaign. The New York Times reported that officials believe Iranian hackers probably carried out the attack. However, investigators have not yet confirmed who was responsible, and Minnesota's investigation is still ongoing.

Cyberattacks on important infrastructure have become a growing worry for US officials. Iran has been suspected of running several campaigns against American targets in recent years.
