Canadian trade minister meets U.S. officials over tariff deadline

Canada's trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, met with two senior U.S. officials in Washington on Monday to try to prevent new American tariffs. The meeting lasted almost two hours. LeBlanc spoke with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Canada's chief trade negotiator, Janice Charette, also attended. After the meeting, LeBlanc said that "our job is not yet done." The new tariffs were due to start just after midnight on Wednesday. LeBlanc had also spoken with Greer by video call on Sunday for about an hour, and described that conversation as constructive. However, after an earlier meeting on Friday, Canadian officials said the two sides were still far from an agreement. Canada removed some of its own tariffs on U.S. goods on Friday.
