Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on American goods in trade dispute

Canada has placed new tariffs on American goods after trade talks between the two countries broke down. The first round, covering about C$30 billion of US products, started on February 4, 2025, with a 25% tax. A second, larger round followed 21 days later. Then, on March 13, Canada added tariffs on steel and aluminum worth billions more. Most goods face a 25% rate, though some face higher rates of 50%. Targeted products include dairy, wood, computers, and farm equipment. The Canadian government says it is matching US tariffs dollar for dollar. The US had already placed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, and both sides have accused the other of making unreasonable demands during negotiations.
