Canada cancels joint bridge ceremony with United States over tariff dispute

Canada has canceled a joint ceremony with the United States to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which connects Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The event was planned for Friday. Canada pulled out after President Trump announced a 50% tariff on most Canadian goods. Trump said Canada treats US cars, alcohol, and dairy products unfairly. A Canadian government spokesperson said a shared celebration would not be appropriate given the trade dispute. The two countries had agreed earlier this month to open the bridge together, after previous delays had pushed back the opening. Canada said it will hold its own separate event to mark the occasion. The bridge crosses the Detroit River and has been a long-running construction project between the two neighboring countries.
