Canada announces retaliatory tariffs after U.S. trade talks collapse

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States on August 22, 2026, after trade talks broke down at a midnight deadline.

The U.S. had placed 50% tariffs on around $20 billion of Canadian goods. These include wine, furniture, dairy products, clothing, and hockey equipment. The tariffs gave no special treatment to Canadian goods under the USMCA trade agreement.

Canada will respond with equal tariffs on U.S. goods. These will target American steel, dairy, appliances, and electronics. The Canadian tariffs will start on September 8, 2026.
