Cabin cruiser capsizes near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay

A boat carrying about 20 people sank near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday. The group had rented the vessel, called the Volare, for a family memorial service. A large wave struck the 50-foot cabin cruiser and caused it to roll onto its side. Emergency services received a report of a fire on the boat at around 3:35 p.m. When rescuers arrived, some people were already in the water and others were falling in. Sixteen people were rescued, but one person died and two or three others are still missing. A dog on board also died. Alcatraz Island is a national park located about one mile from the shore.
