Britain deploys fighter jets to defend Saudi Arabia from Houthi attacks

The United Kingdom said on Tuesday it will send RAF Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. The jets will fly defensive missions to protect Saudi cities and key infrastructure from Houthi attacks. They will not carry out offensive strikes against the Houthis.

The Houthis are a rebel group from Yemen, backed by Iran. Over the past month, they have used missiles and drones to attack targets in Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh airport and energy facilities.

The UK will also send military advisers and a transport aircraft. It is extending air-to-air refuelling support for Saudi defensive operations by 90 days. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting approved the deployment. Britain already had some defence personnel and equipment in Saudi Arabia before this announcement.
