Body found in Romania believed to be missing British hiker

Romanian authorities have found a body in the Bucegi Mountains, believed to be George Smyth, a British student who went missing nine months ago. Smyth, 18, was a geology student at the University of Bristol. He disappeared on 23 November 2025 during a solo hiking trip. He called for help from a place called Țigănești, saying he was exhausted and showing signs of hypothermia. The weather that day was dangerous, with strong winds, heavy snow, and thick fog. Rescue teams searched for months using dogs, drones, and helicopters. The body has not yet been formally identified. Avon and Somerset Police told his family about the discovery. Smyth was originally from Newport, in Shropshire, England.
