BBC ends Winterwatch wildlife series after fourteen years on air

The BBC has cancelled Winterwatch, its popular winter wildlife programme, after 14 years on air. The show first appeared in 2012 and followed British animals and nature through the colder months of January and February. Presenters Chris Packham and Kate Humble introduced the series, with Michaela Strachan joining in 2013 and Iolo Williams in 2019.

The BBC says the decision is part of a review of how it commissions programmes, as the broadcaster faces financial pressure. Autumnwatch was also cancelled in 2023 after 17 years.

To replace these seasonal shows, the BBC is launching Naturewatch, a weekly video podcast covering wildlife stories throughout the year. It will be available on BBC Two, iPlayer, and BBC Sounds, and will include appearances from wildlife experts. Springwatch will continue and return in May 2027.
