Avalanche on Broad Peak kills climbers including renowned mountaineer

An avalanche hit Broad Peak mountain in Pakistan on Thursday, striking a ten-person climbing team led by Nirmal Purja. Four bodies have been found by rescue teams on the ground, but their identities are not yet confirmed. Six other climbers are still missing and have not been in contact since the avalanche struck around midday. The group included climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, China, and the United States. Rescuers have found four tracker signals, but they cannot tell if those climbers are alive. Pakistan's army has sent two helicopters to help with the search. Bad weather and the extreme height of the mountain, which stands at 8,047 metres, are making rescue work very difficult. Purja is famous for climbing all 14 mountains over 8,000 metres in just six months in 2019.
