Army secretary Dan Driscoll resigns after conflict with defense secretary

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has announced he will resign after 18 months in the role. His departure is expected before the end of the year. Driscoll had a long-running conflict with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which led to his decision to leave. Deputy Under Secretary Dave Fitzgerald also resigned this week.

Driscoll was a close ally of Vice President JD Vance. He worked on efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war and helped speed up drone development for the military. The White House had asked him to stay until the November midterms.

His resignation leaves the Army without a confirmed leader. Army Chief of Staff General Randy George was fired in April, and no replacement has been named. General Christopher LaNeve is currently serving in the role on a temporary basis.
