Armed drone found at Leipzig airport cargo hub in Germany

Workers at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany found an armed drone on Tuesday night near Ukrainian cargo planes. The drone was inside the secure area close to the southern runway. It carried explosives, including a material called Semtex, and a detonator. The detonator was faulty, so the device did not go off. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the incident represented "a new quality of danger." Early evidence suggests the drone came from Russia. Separately, a DHL cargo plane hit an unknown object while climbing away from Leipzig and made an emergency landing in Hannover with minor damage. Leipzig has been targeted before. In 2024, hidden incendiary devices in parcels caught fire at the airport and on flights across Europe.
