Argentine court orders return of Nazi-looted painting to Jewish heir

An Argentine court has ordered the return of a stolen painting to the family of a Jewish art dealer. The painting, "Portrait of a Lady" by Italian artist Giuseppe Ghislandi, was taken from Jacques Goudstikker's collection in Amsterdam in 1940, after Nazi forces occupied the Netherlands. Goudstikker, who helped other Jews escape the occupation, died at sea while fleeing. His heir, Marei von Saher, will now receive the 18th-century work. Researchers found it hanging in a house near Buenos Aires, owned by the daughter of a senior Nazi official who moved to Argentina after the war. An estate agent's listing led investigators to the property, where they checked the painting against a database of wartime stolen art. Von Saher plans to loan it to the Holocaust Museum of Buenos Aires.
