Argentina players display Falklands banner after England World Cup semifinal win

Argentina beat England 2-1 in a World Cup semifinal in Atlanta on July 15, 2026. Argentina were losing 1-0 with five minutes left, but scored twice to win. They will now play Spain in the final.

After the match, Argentine players held a banner saying "The Falklands are Argentine." The Falkland Islands are British territory near Argentina's coast. Argentina and Britain fought a war over the islands in 1982, and the two countries still disagree about who owns them.

FIFA has rules against political messages in football. In 2014, it fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 for a similar banner. At least one British politician has called for Argentina's players to be banned from the final. FIFA may now take action against the team.
