Anthropic CEO proposes slowing artificial intelligence development pace

On Saturday, Dario Amodei, the CEO of AI company Anthropic, published a long essay calling for a global slowdown in AI development. He said AI is advancing faster than researchers can safely manage. Amodei proposed letting outside evaluators have deep access to AI companies, similar to the access that employees have. These evaluators would check safety procedures and report problems. Anthropic has already agreed to allow this kind of access. Amodei also called on democratic governments to pressure authoritarian countries, including China, to ban dangerous AI applications. The announcement came after several employees at Anthropic and OpenAI resigned because of safety concerns. Amodei also referred to a recent incident involving AI agents that behaved in unexpected ways at OpenAI and Hugging Face.
