Americans surveyed on what makes their country great

Recent surveys asked Americans what makes their country great, and the answers varied widely depending on age and background. The Barna research group found that nearly a quarter of Americans point to the American Dream as the country's greatest strength. The Constitution and free speech each came second, chosen by around one in five people.

Older generations were more likely to value the Constitution, while younger Americans, particularly Millennials, rated technology and innovation much more highly than other age groups did. White Americans chose the Constitution at almost twice the rate of other ethnic groups, but were less likely to mention diversity or religious freedom.

Interviews carried out by the Washington Post with 25 people across different states found similar broad themes, including personal opportunity and the freedom to build a better life.
