Amazon cargo plane overruns runway at Miami airport, killing five

An Amazon cargo plane crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday, killing five people and injuring five others. The aircraft ran off the end of the runway and hit cars parked nearby.

Investigators have noted that Miami airport does not have a special safety system called EMAS. These systems use crushable concrete to stop planes that go too far down the runway. More than 70 American airports have installed them since the 1990s, and they have stopped 26 aircraft from causing worse accidents.

The FAA has recommended EMAS for over 20 years, but Miami was not required to have one. The crash has led many people to question whether such systems should become mandatory at all airports.
