Actor shares parenting techniques for communicating with teenagers

Actor Matthew McConaughey shared his approach to talking with his teenage children on "The Drew Barrymore Show" on Saturday.

McConaughey said he has changed the way he asks his daughter about her day. Instead of "how you doin'?", he now asks "what's it like being a teenager these days?" He explained that this question lets her talk about her experiences more openly, almost as if she is describing someone else's life. The conversations have become much longer as a result.

The actor said his main goal is to understand what his teenagers are going through, not to judge their choices. He also noted that parenting young children is very different from the relationship parents can build with teenagers.
